Anxiety attacks: do's and don’ts

Updated: Aug 18, 2020
Often invisible to the human eye; a hidden battle, that can affect all of us in many different ways.

DO's
Write down your triggers
I tend to find that after having an anxiety attack I can often forget what had triggered it in the first place, especially when there are so many things rushing through my mind all at once.
Celebrate your wins
No matter how small, every step is an accomplishment. This helps to bring the focus back towards the more positive things, as well as helping with confidence and giving you more time to reflect on your achievements.
Focus on something interesting
It could be a hobby or even a project that you’ve been working on. There are lots of movies on Netflix and Disney+ that can take your mind off things.
Remember to breathe
Breathing exercises can really help during triggering situations. I have come across some pretty good apps. You can try CALM, HEADSPACE and many others too. Plus, breathing is great because it keeps you ALIVE!
DONT's
Don’t isolate yourself
Anxiety may want you to separate yourself from the universe, and resisting the urge may be a massive challenge. It’s important to stay in touch with the world around you and not let your anxiety put images of disaster in your mind.
Don’t give up hope
There may not be an immediate solution, it can take some time but everything grows at its own speed. No matter how hard it seems, you can do it! Don’t forget that it is your life and you shouldn’t let anything get in your way. Not even yourself!
Don’t beat yourself up
It may feel like it’s going on forever but don’t beat yourself up. It can be frustrating but dwelling will only cause you to become more anxious. Instead, respond to your anxiety with curiosity and kindness.
Don’t change for anyone
Don’t feel like you have to change who you are. We are all individuals, with our own needs. We may find a variety of coping mechanisms that help at different times. Find what works for you and don’t compare yourself to others.
